A charter school is an open-enrollment, tuition-free public school that is open to ALL grade-appropriate students in a designated geographic area, on a space available basis.  It is an independently managed public school governed by a Board of Trustees. In exchange for flexibility in operation, a charter school is held to a high standard of accountability for performance. There is no cost to attend a charter school.

Great Oaks Legacy is a high performing public charter school system of 7 campuses in Newark educating students in Pre-K through 12th grade. Educating Newark students since 2010, our schools have had strong results, and 82% of all of our graduates have matriculated to or graduated from college. Great Oaks Legacy also offers something truly unique: a comprehensive tutoring program. There's nothing like our tutoring program in Newark, and our students have thrived from this extra investment in their academic potential. Students have access to robust extracurricular offerings, sports, and technology, including a 1:1 Chromebook ratio for middle and high school students.

To enroll your child at a Great Oaks Legacy Charter School campus, you must visit the Newark Common App website when the application window opens in the late fall/winter. Newark Common App is a new and easy to use K-12 school application and enrollment process for Newark families looking to access some of our city’s great charter school options. On the Newark Common App website, you will be able to submit an application, rank your school choices, and receive your single best offer. Please note that Great Oaks Legacy Charter School does not participate in Newark Enrolls. So, the only way you can apply is directly through the Newark Common App website.

Yes! Although preference is given to Newark students, GOLCS enrolls students from surrounding districts. Parents should still apply via the Newark Common App website. Non-Newark students will be placed on our waitlist. Note: Our Pre-K program is only available to Newark residents.

Age requirements for Pre-K: 4 years old by October 1st 2023. Age requirements for Kindergarten: Students must be 5 years old by October 1st 2023.

Our school community provides an extended day schedule. Students arrive between 7:45 and 8:15 am and are greeted warmly every day by campus leadership. The school day includes a strong academic program, tutorial for students in selected grades, and robust extracurricular activity programming. Students are typically dismissed at 4:00 pm. After school programming is available for elementary students. Sports and afterschool enrichments are available to middle and high school students. We provide additional academic intervention to students identified as needing additional support, after school or on Saturdays, based on campus. GOLCS campuses have an early dismissal on Fridays.

Transportation is currently provided at our Legacy Campuses based on availability. Newark students at our downtown campuses may qualify for bus tickets based on their proximity to the school. Please inquire about transportation with our enrollment team.

Yes. Student uniform information is available during parent registration and orientation.

Step 2: Create an account: Sign up using an email address or phone number.
Step 3: Create a profile.  Add students(s)
Step 4: Submit.  Check your email inbox for a confirmation.
